How exactly does reporting a crime / pressing charges work?
Lets say I was the victim of physical assault in the street. There were no police officers on the scene, but there were 2 other identifiable witnesses.
So, first I call the police and report the crime. Does this automatically mean the state will prosecute the criminal?
When/where do I have the decision to choose to press charges?
When/where will I have the ability to sue for monetary gain?
What would happen if there were no witnesses?
If someone could please explain the process by which crimes are reported, charges are filed, and sentencing is handed.
Thank you!
Ah, I appreciate the responses!
Just keep in mind, I haven’t been involved in any kind of incident, I’m simply asking for research reasons!
